Photo of Stew Carter on his Birthday around the time of the childhood sexual abuse

My name is Stew

In 1985, I was sexually abused by a man in my neighbourhood. A primary school teacher and swim coach. In those moments, my voice was stolen, an object for personal gratification to be exploited. My sense of identity and self-worth were infiltrated and demeaned. I was ten years old, a little boy.

Today, I have a voice, I am not a victim.

I have a deep care for community, social justice, sustainability and contemporary legislative reform. I am motivated by communities that are safer, equitable access to education, healthcare and opportunities to prosper.

In October 2023, I sat in a Melbourne courtroom devastated and nearly broken. Instead of sitting with the bitter disappointment, I've chosen to campaign for stronger sentencing of convicted csa offenders. I want to give hope to others struggling with the decision to report that justice is attainable, irrespective of when the offending occurred. â€‹â€‹

I acknowledge and pay my respect to First Australians as the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia and from the lands of the Wurundjeri people on which I live, work and play. I recognise their continuing culture, their contribution and connection to land, waters and community, and pay my respect to elders past, present and emerging. I am committed to being an ally for First Nations peoples. I pledge to remain humble and to actively listen and learn how I can do better.
